Medical Marvels: Advancements in Medicine We Never Dreamed Possible

Medical science has come a long way, and today we are witnessing medical marvels never dreamed possible. While there is discussion as to how health care is delivered to patients, there is no denying today’s technology is at its peak. With more advances being discovered all the time, here are some that feel like science fiction coming to life.

Mapping the Human Genome

Unraveling the mystery of DNA has been a goal of medical science, and now is a reality. Seen as a precursor to many medical advances, this has opened the door to preventive medicine. Scientists have been able to develop tests to check for genes associated with various cancers and other conditions. People will now be able to know years ahead of time, if they are at risk for getting certain diseases, and can take steps to prevent them before they ever become a problem.

Stem Cell Research

Cloning has always been popular in science fiction shows and novels. With Stem Cells it is fast becoming possible. Scientists have already begun cloning human stem cells this year. This medical technology could mean an end to the diseases of the skin, hear and eyes and can repair many types of tissue.

Blood and Sperm Banks

Who could have imagined hundreds of years ago, places where all types of blood would be stored to help those in need, or places where people could choose the type of baby they wish to have? Such is the case with today’s blood and sperm banks. Countless lives are saved with blood from these facilities. Blood storage can be used to treat numerous diseases including cancer. With place like a California cryobank, couples can choose the type of sperm donor they wish to have and what traits they want their child to have as well. These medical achievements have certainly been amazing in changing the lives of so many.

Heart Disease No Longer a Death Sentence

Twenty-five years ago, patients who had heart attacks went to the emergency room where doctors crossed their fingers and hoped for good things to happen. Nowadays it’s a whole new ballgame. Speed is the name of the game, as are clot-busting drugs given to patients to dissolve life-threatening clots and open-heart surgery that bypasses diseased arteries with new ones. Since 1998, there has been a 40% reduction in coronary disease deaths, with that number expected to increase.

As technology continues to advance, the possibilities for medical advances are almost limitless. As more funding is put into research, we can only look forward to these advances made in the years to come.
